Mauldin cruises past Riverside

The frustration of a winless season continued for Riverside Thursday night as the Warriors again found themselves overmatched in Region II-4A.

Visiting Mauldin scored touchdowns on seven of its first eight possessions en route to a 49-14 victory, the second straight win for the Mavericks and the eighth loss in as many games this season for Riverside.

"It's just frustrating that we can't get it done in the first quarter and the second quarter," Riverside head coach Phil Smith said.

"It'd help if we had a JV program. I know we're playing a bunch of young kids out there, but it's frustrating for all of us."

Mauldin quarterback Dre Harris and receiver Hunter Dawsey were at the crux of that frustration. Harris threw for four first-half touchdowns -- all for more than 20 yards -- and running for another as the Mavericks (5-3, overall, 3-1 Region II-4A) jumped out to a 42-7 lead by halftime. The first three of Harris' touchdown throws went to Dawsey.

Harris ran for 67 yards on 11 carries, including a 5-yard touchdown scamper. He also completed 8 of 11 passes for 186 yards, including touchdowns of 28, 34, 46 and 22 yards.

Running back Averius Blakely added a 2-yard touchdown run on Mauldin's opening possession of the third quarter to extend the lead to 49-7 with 9:45 to play in the third.

Riverside's bright spots were few, but included a 71-yard touchdown pass from Aaron Odom to wideout Braxton Collins on the first play of the second quarter, cutting Mauldin's lead to 21-7.

The touchdown accounted for 71 of Riverside's 91 yards of total offense in the first half. The Warriors (0-8, 0-4) finished with 208 yards from scrimmage.

With Mauldin's starting units pulled in the second half, Riverside's backups got playing time in the fourth quarter and made the most of the opportunity with a six-play, 78-yard scoring drive. The touchdown was set up by Logan Dibenedetto's 32-yard pass to Hunter Faulk and capped by Robert Wang's 3-yard touchdown run. Wang ran for a team-high 29 yards on five carries.
