Carson McAbee is a gold medal winner in a sport that only the strongest can claim the title – Champion.

McAbee, 17, won the teen division of the USAPL Raw Powerlifting Championship in Orlando, Fla. All the more remarkable was it culminated McAbee’s first season of competing in the USA Powerlifting Championships.

 His national championship lifts were:

squat, 479.5 pounds

• deadlift507 pounds

• bench, 264.5 pounds

• Total 549.9 kg, 1,250 pounds

The national competition was a first for McAbee. He has only been competing for two years, mostly in state and regional competition. His road toward the nationals began at the age of 15.

McAbee broke three state records in the Palmetto Classic in August and qualified for the nationals.

McAbee is a senior at St. Joseph’s Catholic School, plays varsity baseball and is a semifinalist for the National Merit Scholarship Program .

He is the son of Joey and Renee McAbee of Greer.
