Nesbitt was feted as the Greer and Greenville touchdown club’s offensive player of the week in the Yellow Jackets’ 59-14 win over Greenville.
Greer Head Coach Will Young introduced Nesbitt today to the Greer TD Club members and guests. He mentioned Nesbitt was told he was going to get one more series to try to reach the 300-yard rushing mark before his night was over last week.
“Quez takes the kickoff and takes it to the house,” Young said. “He ruined his own chance to get 300 yards.” Nesbitt modestly lowered his head as the room laughed.
“Greer has made a great living off of undersized running backs,” Young said. Nesbitt, a sophomore, is 5-foot-6, 142-pounds, “has the potential of being better than any of them. He runs well, catches passes and blocks well,” Young said.
Nesbitt’s teammates frequently challenge him at practice and enjoy trash talking to him when they score a rare advantage in drills. “Quez is not a kid who takes losing well. He doesn’t like to be defeated,” Young said.
Blue Ridge linebacker Caleb Bennett was honored as the defensive player of the week.
COACHES SPEAK:
Wade Cooper, Blue Ridge: “We had a good week versus Berea (56-0 win). We challenge the players every week and looked at last week’s game in perspective of us getting better. They responded well.
“This week we have Travelers Rest (0-4) and we’re looking for more improvement. It will be a big challenge on each side of the ball. We will be focused on assignment football. We want to finish the non-conference schedule 5-0. That is our goal.”
Steve Euote, Riverside: “We are looking at the positives. The players are playing their tails off. I liked that we didn’t quit in last week’s game (42-0 loss to Easley). We persevered to the end. It may be more that way, that the boys learn down the road what life is about. Their spirits are good and the boys are improving. We need to survive the next three weeks against Dorman, Laurens and Byrnes.”
LEFTOVERS
• WEDDING BELLS: Justin Hill gave his regrets for not coming to next week’s TD Club meeting. Hill, a vice president at Bank of Travelers Rest in the Greer office, is getting married, to Michelle Allen, a former Miss Flambeau at Greer High School. Hill quarterbacked Greer to its 1996 state championship and played at Furman where he helped Furman to the Southern Conference championship in 1999.
• X-FACTOR: Mike Lowery, the emcee of Greer Idol, was asked his thoughts on Simon Cowell’s new venture, X-Factor, that debuted Wednesday night on FOX. “I liked the show and L.A. Reid and Simon Cowell have different insights to what they see,” Lowery said the two highest profile judges. It appeared the network was trying to create a rivalry with Reid and Cowell showing gamesmanship voting opposite each other. “I don’t think that,” Lowery said. “Simon held up his hand on a girl, and we thought he was going to ask her to stop and vote her out. He told her to ‘just sing’. She sang beautifully and was moved on. Simon can just tell from the littlest things that we don’t see that someone has talent.”
• NO SECOND GUESSING: Colton Korn, Byrnes High School quarterback and previous TD Club offensive player of the week, played the Pick ‘Ems contest, selecting winners and losers of high school and college games. Korn was last week’s winner with only one miss. He picked Byrnes to beat Gaffney. But Gaffney won, 35-13, dropping Byrnes to 2-2.
• TOO BAD: John West, former Furman athletic director, asked for a recount when he was introduced as the worst picker last week with 9 games wrong.
• POWERHOUSE IN THE MAKING: North Greenville University is ranked No. 24 in the NCAA Division II football poll. The Crusaders’ first three games have been against South Atlantic Conference schools, which NGU, a non-member, has a scheduling alliance. NGU beat Tusculum College, 27-7, last week and knocked off Newberry 46-17 in the season-opener. The Crusaders lost to Presbyterian College, 38-21. “I guess we’re not quite as bad as the SAC thought we were,” Wilson Nelson, NGU Director of Major Gifts, said. The SAC doesn’t have any teams ranked.
• GUEST SPEAKER: Johnny Roscoe, head coach at North Guilford High School, and former 20-year coach at Lancastere High, was the guest speaker.
