Quez Nesbitt is much like a thoroughbred chomping at the bit to run wild.
Friday night, the Greer High School senior running back took matters virtually in his own hands and feet in the second half running for 290 yards and scoring four touchdowns in a 42-3 Region II-3A victory over Travelers Rest.
Nesbitt came within 16 yards of last week's totals of 306 yards and 5 TDs scored.
Greer Head Coach Will Young told the Yellow Jackets Sports Network, “If you would have asked us that coming over here it was going to be a dogfight, the answer probably was no. We’ve done well all year coming back from adversity and we did it again tonight.”
Nesbitt apparently had seen enough of a lethargic offense with a 7-3 first half lead where he rushed for only 70 yards and was held scoreless. His first scoring run, 18 yards, was called back on a Greer penalty.
Nesbitt scored on consecutive second half possessions with runs of 11, 41, 7, and 84 yards. At that point, with 11 minutes remaining, Nesbitt’s night of work was over with 19 carries, 290 yards and his TDs.
“Quez is the best we have on the field. We took a couple of things off the table in the first half and put them back on the table in the second half,” Young said. “We ran the ball all second half. We still have to find ways to get good at some other stuff.”
Emanuel Kelly picked up a Travelers Rest fumble for a 47-yard score to end Greer’s second half domination. Nick Roberson made all six of his extra point kicks.
“The big thing was we got back to what we do well,” Young said. “We had four possessions in the first half and didn’t do well. The first half we had to get the offense on the field.”
Greer’s win is the 11th straight over Travelers Rest. The Yellow Jackets have won four straight games since losing its opener at Seneca. Halfway through the regular season, Greer is 4-1 overall and 2-0 in the Region. Travelers Rest fell to 2-3 and 0-2 in the region.
Greer plays Eastside next Friday at Dooley Field in Homecoming. Malek Johnson, senior defensive back, separated his shoulder for the second time this year during last Friday’s game vs. Greenville and did not play. He is questionable for next Friday’s game.
The YJSN was trying to figure the most prolific rushers in school history and could only reference to 1990 when it began its game broadcasts. Dominique Parks reportedly has 4,900 yards rushing and Lajerik Cannon 4,700, according to YJSN. Nesbitt, reportedly, is within 300 yards of overtaking Parks for the unofficial rushing record.
Travelers Rest played keep away from Greer in the first half, having possession for 17 minutes to Greer’s 7. The Devildogs ran 27 plays for 165 yards and Greer had 177 yards on 23 plays. Cusano was intercepted twice in the half.
