On July 16, 1920, Andrew J. and Bessie Dobbins Johnson welcomed their baby boy who they named Alfred O. Johnson, and he was ever after called Red. On August 15, 2018, with his family by his side, Red rejoined his parents after a fruitful life of 98 years on this earth.

Red loved his Lord and his Wellford Baptist Church family where he was a faithful, lifelong member. There he served in any way he could including director of Sunday School and Church Training for many years. He was a member of the church choir and served as a deacon, receiving the honor of Deacon Emeritus. Red greeted everyone with his huge smile, making all feel at home.

During World War II, Red served his country in the Army Air Force. For 26 years, he served as Postmaster of Wellford Post Office, was active in the National Association of Postmasters, and served as president of the South Carolina Chapter for one year. He was Past Master of Jackson Lodge AFM and a charter member of the Wellford Cemetery Association. As one of the original members of the Byrnes High Football Booster Club, Red was an avid Byrnes fan. He also assisted in organizing the PTA at Byrnes High School.

Red had a passion for playing golf and loved the time spent with friends on the links. He put together many church tournaments that led to fellowship among all ages of men in the church. These tournaments continue today. Red was so avid a golfer, he continued to play up to the age of 97. The family has deep appreciation of all the guys who made time to ensure Red had a ride to the golf course and how they helped him be able to play in his later years.

The Johnson family extends their gratitude to the Ashlan Village staff for the kindness and care given to our Dad and Mom in recent months. Also to Maurice Hood and the entire staff of Spartanburg Regional Hospice for the guidance and support they all provided.

Sharing 75 years of life with his beloved bride, Elsie D. Johnson, Red is also survived by a daughter, Janice Bosman and her husband Joe of Pendleton, and a son Carey Johnson and his wife Judy of Lyman.
