Cecil Buford Thackston, 92, passed from this life following a brief illness October 3, 2022, surrounded by family and dear friends at his home, 175 McSandco Road, Woodruff, SC 29388.
Cecil was born January 2,1930 as the last child of 10 born to Seaborn E. and Stella Owings Thackston in Laurens County.
He was a United States Army Veteran, having served in the Korean War and in Germany.
After his return to his hometown area, he met and married Jerelyn Westmoreland, who predeceased him in 2001. They had twin sons, Terry Cecil, and Tony Burl Thackston born August 27, 1958. Terry predeceased his father in 2011.
They lived in Greer for many years where Cecil began an automotive business, Thackston's Garage which he ran successfully for many decades before retiring and moving back to the banks of the river in the area where he grew up between Fountain Inn and Woodruff.
As well as his son, Tony, three grandchildren, whom he loved dearly, survive him. Tia Thackston Phillips (Daniel) is the only daughter of Tony. Terry's children are David E. Thackston (Crystal) and Britteny Mercedes Thackston. Great grandchildren are Bryson, Ethan (David) and Kasen Cecil, Zayden Shawn, Ayden Miguel, Makenleigh Rayne (Britteny). Cecil is the last surviving member of his family of origin.
In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by all nine Thackston siblings, Hunter (Callie), Grace Thackston Pearson (Groce), Grady (Pearl), Ben (Parmalee), J.T. (Margaret), Charles (Ada), Marvin (Francis), Louise Thackston Hipps (William), and Virginia Thackston Osteen. Margaret Thackston is the only surviving spouse.
A multitude of nieces and nephews and their multi-generational families love and cherish their "Uncle Cecil". In recent years he has offered his riverside property as an annual gathering spot for the very extended family to gather to share their lives and family stories.
Graveside services and interment will be held Saturday, October 8, 2022 at 2 p.m., in the Wood Memorial Park, 863 Gap Creek Road, Duncan, South Carolina, 29334. The Wood Mortuary of Greer is in charge.
