A native of Brooklyn, New York, son of the late Norbert Francis Smith and Theresa Dorothea O'Hara Smith, he was a U.S. Navy Veteran of Vietnam and a retired CPA for Phillip Morris Kraft.

Surviving are his wife, Roberta Lyn Bravakis Smith of the home; two sons, Richard Smith of Woodland Hills, California and David Smith of the home; two step-daughters, Vanessa Hunter of Anderson and Jessica Monahan of Simpsonville; a sister, Patricia Panebianco; two grandchildren, Luke and Evelyn Smith of Woodland Hills, California; and a step-grandson, Gaberial Hitchcock of Anderson.
