Douglas H. Whitener, 93, of 2509 Holiday Road, died February 8, 2014 at his home.
A native of Greenville County, he was a son of the late Claude and Ethel Johnson Whitener, a retired employee of Springs Industries, and a charter member of Northwood Baptist Church.
He was a US Army veteran having served with Merrill?s Marauders in the China Burma India Theater of WWII where he earned the Purple Heart.
Surviving are his wife, Dortha "Dot" Mills Whitener of the home; a son, Steve Whitener of Greer; a daughter, JoAnne Slay of Jackson, MS; a sister, Lois Bolin of Landrum; four grandchildren, Misty Miller, Ian Whitener and Tim and Clay Slay, and a number of great-grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Charles and Cecil Whitener and one sister, Lillian Rousch.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Monday at Northwood Baptist Church, conducted by Rev. Dale McCoig and Rev. Michael Joe Harvell. Burial will follow in Wood Memorial Park.
Honorary escort will be his Sunday School Class.
Visitation will be held from 1:00 to 1:45 p.m. Monday at the church prior to the service.
