Dr. Nancy Lee Turner Welch, 77, of Greer, died Thursday, Sept. 27, 2018.
She was born on July 25, 1941 to the late Reverend Dr. Fred Phillips Turner and Mrs. Alice Archambeau Turner in Nashville, TN.
Dr. Welch grew up in Ocala, FL where she graduated from Ocala High School and then received her BS Degree from Florida State University where she was president of her sorority, Zeta Tau Alpha. Later, she received both her Master's Degree and Doctorate from Clemson University and was a Civil Mediator.
During her career, she taught elementary school in Rock Hill, and public relations at Clemson University.
She hosted The Nancy Welch Show on two CBS affiliates, WBTW-TV in Florence, and on WSPA-TV in Spartanburg, where she hosted the show for 23 years. She was the Director of Public Relations for the Clinchfield Railroad in Erwin, TN, and Community Cash stores in Spartanburg, owned an interior design shop and a monogram shop, was the owner and operator of a restaurant and The Glen Rock Inn in Montreat, NC.
Dr. Welch worked for Greenville Technical College for 18 years and started the Benson Campus of Greenville Tech in Greer. At her retirement in 2009, she was Vice President for Student Services at the college.
She published several craft books and cookbooks, including Cooking on the Go, The Four Ingredient Cookbook, and A Taste of Humor Cookbook. She wrote The Innkeeper's Tales about the Glen Rock Inn. She was a contributing editor to GREERNOW Magazine from the first publication in 2006 and she wrote the home and food section.
In 2015, she wrote a fiction book, Alice's List. In 2016, she wrote a second fiction book, The Reunion. Her third fiction book, The Ghost of Dr. Baskins, was published in 2017.
She was an active member of First Presbyterian Church of Greer, having served as Chairman of the Board of Deacons, an Elder, President and Life Member of Presbyterian Women of the Church, and Sunday School teacher.
She was Moderator of the Board of SC Inn, Montreat, NC, Moderator of Foothills Presbytery, and Chairman of the Council of Foothills Presbytery. She was also active in her community, having served as Chairman of the Greater Greer Chamber of Commerce, Chairman of the Board of Greer Community Ministries, Graduate of Leadership Greer and Greenville, Commissioner with Greenville County Historic Preservation Commission, Member of the Spartanburg County Library Board, Member of the Spartanburg County Jail Commission, Member of Steering Committee for Kids Planet Playground, Board of Directors of Goodwill Industries Foundation, Member of Greater Greer Education Foundation, Member of the Advisory Board of North Greenville University, Member of Steering Committee for Greer Family Festival, Board of Directors of Greenville Little Theatre, Rotary Club of Greenville, Board of Directors of The Brow Association, Columbus, NC, Member of Board of Advisors of BB&T Greer, Member of Community Advisory Board BMW North America, Member of the Board of Cancer Survivors Park, and a Member of the Board of the Greer Middle College.
She received awards including: Women Making History 2016; The Inaugural Senator J. Verne Smith Award 2012 from the Greer Chamber of Commerce; Woman of Achievement Award 2010 from the Miss South Carolina Organization; Outstanding Leadership Award 2009, Greater Greer Chamber of Commerce; 2005 Martha Kime Piper Award for Leadership from SC Women in Higher Education; One of the Most Influential People in Greenville 2004; Educator of the Year 2003, South Carolina Technical Education Association; Top 100 Broadcasters of America; Edd Burch Award for Service to the Community of Greer from Greer Relief; and Outstanding Woman of the Year for Spartanburg and Greenville.The Nancy Welch Show was selected as the Outstanding Women's Television Show in South Carolina.
She is survived by her husband, Robert H. Harrison Jr. of the home; two sons, Charles Turner Welch (Heather Hendley) and granddaughter, Hendley Turner Welch of Greer, and Nelson Hill Welch (Kristen Davis), grandsons, Charles Davis, Charles Nelson, and granddaughter, Haley Kristen of Spartanburg; a daughter, Anna Harrison Brawley (Dr. Vince), a grandson, Harrison of Martinez, GA, a granddaughter, Leanna Brawley Dyches (Matthew), and great-granddaughters, Anna Kate and Emily of Augusta, GA; a daughter, Margaret Harrison Proffitt (Graham) and granddaughter, Rachel of Greer, and a granddaughter, Ashley Proffitt Surratt (Andrew) of New Bern, NC. She is also survived by one sister, Jean Turner, one niece, Elizabeth Turner Davis (Tim), and two nephews, Greg Turner and Glenn Turner of Marietta, GA; as well as her stepmother, Mrs. Macy Privett Boyd Turner of the Presbyterian Home Communities in Florence.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 30, 2018, at First Presbyterian Church of Greer, by The Rev. Brandi Casto-Waters. Interment will be in Wood Memorial Park, 863 Gap Creek Rd., Duncan, SC 29334.
