Smiley Broadus Williams, 99, widower of Nettie Henson Williams, passed away June 2, 2017.

Born March 17, 1918 in Greenville County, he was a son of the late General Broadus and Mary Attie Henson Williams. Mr. Williams was a 1936 graduate of Jordan High, graduated Clemson University in 1940 with a degree in Vocational Agriculture and graduated Western Carolina in 1964 with a Master's degree in Education. He had a 30-year career with Greenville County School District benefiting the Blue Ridge and Greer communities including: teaching at Pleasant Hill and Fairview Elementary Schools, teaching Principal at Reid and Apalache Elementary Schools and Principal at Victor Elementary School.

Mr. Williams was a peach farmer and an adjuster with Federal Crop Insurance until the age of 83.

He was a lifelong member of Mount Lebanon Baptist Church, having served as Sunday School Teacher for five decades, Chairman of Deacons for 11 years and Chairman of Building Committee.

Mr. Williams was a charter member of Blue Ridge Touchdown Club, long-time member of Blue Ridge Athletic Booster Club, quoted in Blue Ridge football program "I'm interested in the welfare of our young people and they need to be encouraged!"

He was instrumental in the incorporation of Blue Ridge Water Company; also served as first director and was a Gibson softball field supporter.

Surviving:

Surviving are a daughter, Margaret Elaine Welchel Lindsey (Dan) of Greer; four grandchildren, Valerie Southerlin (Roan), Allison Farmer (Charles, Jr.), David Welchel (Ansley) and Alan Welchel (Angie); eleven great-grandchildren, Sydney and Marissa Southerlin, Sierra and Taylor Farmer, Jameson and Selah Welchel, and Abigail, Anna, Alana, Al and Augustus Welchel; and two sisters, Ruby Banister and Evelyn Allen.

Mr. Williams was predeceased by a son, Norman Williams, one brother and five sisters.

Funeral Services:

Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Sunday, June 4, 2017 at Mount Lebanon Baptist Church, conducted Rev. Mark Smith and Rev. Joe Price. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
