Mark Owens, 27, has been promoted to Vice President for the Greater Greer Chamber of Commerce, effective immediately. Owens, formerly Director of Events and the Director of Business Development, will maintain those responsibilities with added duties including staff management.
“This is a position we have been working on since December,” Allen Smith, Executive Director and CEO of the chamber. Smith became the chamber head in June 2010.
Owens’ new position will include an expanded role in organizational management and will work closely with the Executive Committee and Board of Director meetings as one of the two Chamber’s lead executives.
“It’s tremendous for my growth and to be a part of a board of executives and committees that make the decisions,” Owens said. “It gives me more of a direct impact with the chamber and management tasks. It’s going to be very exciting and intense.
“The first day I met with Mark he said his goal was to be in a position where I am. I feel it is incumbent on me professionally to develop that talent,” Smith said. ‘It gives Mark the opportunity to work on the chamber and not in it.”
The first day Allen met with me he asked my goals. I told him that I wanted to be sitting in a position where he is.
Over the last four years, Owens has led the chamber in sponsorships, business development programs, adult and junior leadership development programs, and chamber networking events. “We have a great team at the Greer Chamber, and I am honored and excited about this new opportunity and look forward to continuing to serve our members at a high level,” Owens said.
A drop-in is scheduled Wednesday, June 6 at the chamber from 4:30-6 p.m.
