Palka, Johnson picked in Major League Draft

Arizona picks Palka, Angels take Johnson

Daniel Palka and Taylor Johnson, two former Greer High School players, were picked in the Major League Baseball Draft.

The Arizona Diamondbacks selected Palka in the third round and 88th pick overall. Furman outfielder Johnson, was picked by the Los Angeles Angels in the 31st round and was the 937th overall.

Palka played at Georgia Tech where he batted .314, hit 41 home runs and drove in 165 runs. His 3-year career ended last week in the NCAA Regionals. He will have a physical on Sunday and report Monday to Scottsdale Ariz., the Angels’ Rookie League team in the Arizona League.

Johnson, in three seasons at Furman, appeared in 153 games, hit 317 with 18 home runs and 106 RBI.

Nate Smith, a teammate of Johnson, was picked by the Angels in the eighth round. Johnson and Smith both earned their degrees in May.
