Riverside Track & Field and Cross Country senior Harper Harris has been awarded the Sharonda Coleman-Singleton Scholarship by the South Carolina Track and Cross Country Coaches Association.
The Singleton Scholarship, named after a Goose Creek Track & Field Coach who was one of the nine victims of the Emmanuel Church shooting in Charleston, is awarded to two senior Track & Field and Cross Country athletes in South Carolina every year. The nominees fill out an application to show how they display the “Six Pillars of Character" — Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring, and Citizenship.
Because of Harper’s full appointment to the United States Coast Guard Academy, he has requested that the SCTCCCA pass the $600 scholarship to the next athlete in the voting process.
Harper follows last year’s winner, Abigail Smith, also from Riverside High School. Riverside is the first school to receive this Scholarship more than one time.
