SCGOP ratifies opening filing for Senate District 5

The SCGOP Executive Committee held an emergency meeting Tuesday night where it unanimously ratified SCGOP Chairman Chad Connelly's decision to re-opening candidate filing in State Senate District 5.

Sen. Phil Shoopman announced Sunday night he had decided not to seek re-election for District 5. That made Amanda Somers, a first-time candidate, the apparent winner of the primary and, with no democratic opposition in the November election, the winner of the seat.

Candidate filing was opened Monday at noon and will end tomorrow (Wednesday) at noon.

Tom Corbin, a first-term representative from Travelers Rest, filed Monday afternoon to again make it a two person race.

Following the ratification, Chairman Connelly stated, "I want to commend the SCGOP executive committee for their unanimous decision. Competitive elections are the foundation of a constitutional republic."

The filing fee is $416, and potential candidates can contact Greenville County Republican Party Chairwoman Betty Poe (864-907-1577 - [email protected]) or Spartanburg County Republican Party Chairwoman LaDonna Ryggs (864-906-5574 - [email protected]) to file.
