Alan Scheidhauer (right) receives the A. Wade Martin Innovator of the Year award from Darrel Staat, president of the South Carolina Technical College System.
Scheidhauer was selected as the overall winner from this year’s nominees. Each of the 16 colleges in the South Carolina Technical College System nominates a candidate.
Scheidhauer was selected because of the role he has played in impacting the health and nutrition of the area’s young people. Chef Alan, department head for the Culinary Institute of the Carolinas at Greenville Tech, has partnered with the Greenville County Schools Food and Nutrition Services unit to train all school district food service employees in creating healthy, tasty foods with an emphasis on locally sourced fruits and vegetables. Eventually, food service personnel from all district schools will undergo the training, and their schools will replace hot dogs, pizza, French fries, and high-sodium fare with healthy menu items that appeal to students.
A graduate of the Culinary Institute of America, Scheidhauer worked for Club Corporation of America before joining the faculty of Greenville Technical College in 1993. He designed and planned the Culinary Institute of the Carolinas, which opened at Greenville Tech’s Northwest Campus in 2008, and today prepares over 400 students annually for careers as sous chefs, pastry chefs, catering directors, hotel and restaurant managers, and certified culinarians.
Scheidhauer is a Certified Executive Chef with the American Culinary Federation and was named Hospitality Educator of the Year in 2010 by the South Carolina Restaurant and Lodging Association.
