John Scott Jr., former standout at Greer High School, has been hired as the defensive line coach at Texas Tech.
Scott was defensive line coach and special teams coordinator at Georgia Southern the past three years. He joins a staff that features six former Texas Tech football players, including head coach Kliff Kingsbury.
“I want guys who want to be head coaches,” Kingsbury said. “I think that’s how you get the best work ethic out of them. You don’t want guys that are content at being on a certain level. You want them to want to move up. That’s what this group is. They all want to be head coaches and I think a bunch of them will one day.”
Scott graduated Greer in 1995 and played for the 1994 state championship team.
He coached two All-Americans at Georgia Southern – Brent Russell, the career sacks leader and Roderick Tinsley. GSU advanced to the semifinals of the Football Championship Subdivision during Scott’s three years in Statesboro.
Scott had previous coaching stints at Missouri State (outside linebackers), and three years at his alma mater Western Carolina University (defensive line, outside linebackers). He started all four years at WCU.
Upon graduating WCU, Scott played three years with the Greensboro (N.C) Prowlers in the Arena Football League 2 and began his coach career at West Davidson (Lexington, N.C.) in 2001.
He was a graduate assistant at Louisiana-Lafayette for two years (defensive line), earning his master’s degree in education. Scott coached (defensive line) at Norfolk State in 2005.
Scott and his wife, Stephanie, also a graduate of WCU, are the parents of a son, John III, and daughter, Juliette.
