Texas Gov. Rick Perry meets Wendy Mitchell at Southern Thymes during his 2012 campaign stop for president.
“I’m reopening Southern Thymes and will have the same menu we cooked for years, meat-and-three and we will serve breakfast and lunch,” Mitchell told GreerToday.com. “It might take me a little while to get back.”
Mitchell, owner of Lake View Steak House on Hwy. 14, said her tentative opening is this month. She said there is some cleaning, restocking and hiring to be done before re-opening. Several of her former wait staff will return.
Southern Thymes closed two weeks ago when customers didn’t respond to a menu change from its former traditional fare.
“We’re going back to what worked,” Mitchell said. “We’re going to have good home cooking. I like to think we had the best customers of any restaurant.”
Still undecided is if the former owners will allow Mitchell to use the name Southern Thymes Café.
Southern Thymes was a popular stop for churchgoers who would visit after services. The Greer Rotary Club held its meetings there and has tentatively moved to the Stomping Grounds.
Mitchell said she is also re-opening to build on downtown’s rejuvenation. “I think we brought a lot of people downtown,” she said.
Mitchell said she always knew when her customers were fulfilled. “I love when customers come to the register and rub their bellies.”
