A student at Byrnes Freshman Academy made administrators and guidance counselors aware of a social media post Tuesday that posed a potential threat to school safety.
District Five administrators immediately got law enforcement involved, and began an investigation. The information included a Snapchat post by a Freshman Academy student that showed a gun, and included threatening language toward the school, and fellow students.
Officers questioned the student involved, who admitted to making the social media post. It was discovered the gun pictured was actually a BB gun, which officers confiscated.
“There is no such thing as a joke in today’s school climate,” Superintendent Dr. Scott Turner said.
“District Five takes all threats seriously, will investigate, and any students involved will be disciplined and potentially prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” Turner said.
Per District Five’s policy, the student has been recommended for expulsion, pending a disciplinary hearing.
Extra law enforcement will be on hand this week at both Byrnes Freshman Academy and Byrnes High School.
