The banner is bittersweet for the Holtzclaws. It’s a reminder of their mother, Sylvia Holtzclaw, and her life that ended in one of the most bizarre bank robberies held in the state. Sylvia, a teller, and two customers were murdered at Blue Ridge Savings Bank on May 16, 2003. A reward is still posted for the unsolved crime.
The community shares the memory with the Holtzclaws by donating unwrapped toys for kids of all ages. The toys will be collected Sunday, Nov. 13 from 2-4 p.m. at Clock, at 603 W. Poinsett Street.
The Clock’s Jimmy and Arthur Chaulkis have been supporters of the Holtzclaws since the tragedy. All toy drives have been held at the restaurant.
Two women who were close to Sylvia started the toy drive eight years ago. It has helped thousands of children over the years.
The toys will be given to Country Santa and Cops for Tots programs to help needy children in the Greer area.
