D’Anta Fleming is the first Greer High School football player to receive the Greer Touchdown Club Player of the Week Award on defense for his outstanding play in last week’s 62-6 victory over Berea.

Fleming ran one of his two interceptions back for a 28-yard touchdown, had two pass breakups and in the past three games he has only allowed one pass completion.
Fleming received his award at the Greer Touchdown Club’s meeting today at United Methodist Church.

“D’Anta represents the type of kids that we coach,” Greer Head Coach Will Young said. “He does everything right in practice, school and socially. His character is phenomenal.”
Fleming, a 5-foot-10, junior, plays defensive back and wide receiver. He caught one pass for 38 yards last week.

Mazzie Drummond, coach of the defensive backs, said Fleming “could have won this award each of the last three weeks. He is always doing the right thing.”

Caleb Rowe of Blue Ridge was the TD Club’s offensive player of the week.

JACKETS HEALTHY: Young said the Greer coaching staff was pleased to put the game with Berea behind them and move on to Greenville. “Last year we had our starting running back and center get hurt,” Young said. “This year thank goodness we have no major injuries to report.”

Young said Berea’s young team presented a psychological dilemma. “We didn’t want the kids to play down and they didn’t against Berea.”

The Yellow Jackets (1-1) have an open week due to its playing Seneca in Week 0. Greenville will play Greer next Friday at Dooley Field at 7:30 p.m.
The Jackets have had a heavy week of contact. “It’s been a great week of practice,” Young said. “The young players have showed up well and we’re real excited about the progress we have made and where we’re going.”

Young said Greer is scheduled to practice today and Friday and begin game week preparations for Greenville on Monday.

TD CLUB GETS PEP TALK:  Wofford Head Coach Mike Ayers was the guest speaker today before a packed crowd. Ayers, a flamboyant and fiery speaker, described his passion as a coach, teacher and parental responsibilities for the players at Wofford.
Wofford plays at Clemson Saturday at 3:30 p.m. Both teams are 1-0. Wofford last played Clemson during the Tigers’ 1981 national championship season. The Terriers lost 38-14.

GREER ALUMS: Sophomores Tymeco Gregory, offensive tackle, and Thomas Simmons, wide receiver, are two graduates of Greer High who play for Wofford. Gregory is a starter and Simmons is a reserve.

“Ty is a prototypical Wofford lineman, 6-2, 285. Be careful if he punches you,” Ayers said as he demonstrated a quick, powerful punch to the stomach. “He will hurt you.” “Simmons had a groin tear last year and is back 100 percent. He is working his way up as a wide receiver.

“They are fabulous guys and great students. If we had to recruit them all over again, we would, double,” Ayers said.

COACHES SPEAK: Greer area high school coaches gave a capsule of their season to date.

Blue Ridge Coach Wade Cooper: “We’re staying on coaches and players to keep up the tempo of the game. We have a chance to do some good things this year. Blue Ridge (2-0) plays at Pendleton (2-0) Friday night at 7:30 p.m.

Eastside Coach Jeff Thomason: “What we did last Friday night was unacceptable (57-0 loss to Blue Ridge). We came right back on Monday morning at 8 o’clock and did Oklahoma (1-on-1 contact drills) until 8:45. We have 50 kids on the team and 49 showed up for practice. The other was excused but returned for the afternoon practice. We’re fired up at Eastside. We’re slowing changing the attitude and culture. We will lose only three seniors from this year’s team. But we’ll pay the price for it on Friday night.” Eastside (0-2) plays at Wade Hampton (1-1) Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Riverside Coach Steve Euote: “I expect us to be competitive, in every game and win every game. We have 16 players in the lineup that were not there last year. We’ve been hit by the flu but and have 2-3 players out.” Riverside is 1-1 and plays at Woodmont (0-2) Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Byrnes Coach Chris Miller: “We went in the opposite direction last week. We led 21-7 and had a one-hour rain delay. Then we lead 21-14 and had another hour rain delay. We need to regroup this week. Bayside, Florida has speed and some of their linemen are over 300 pounds. Bayside (0-1) and Byrnes (1-1) play Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Byrnes.
They said it:  “I thought (Maryland) was playing a roller derby game.”Ronnie Bruce Describing Maryland’s football jersey worn Monday night
