We have been frequently asked how the Benchmark Bicycle Supply Co., got its name. So, here’s the back story according to co-owner Ben Schowe.

“I grew up within a household where my dad’s name was Ben,” said Schowe. “I ran in high school with a teammate named Ben and when I was in college, my roommate was named Ben. When I was in the service I reported an officer named Ben.

“I started working with Ben (co-partner Griswold) four to five years ago and we got along well. We have very similar temperaments and have a lot of similar interests in bike stuff. When we decided to put a bike shop in Greer we would get a pitcher of beer and have pizza while talking about old cars.

"Just about every morning we would meet at Stomping Grounds to talk about the business and we had a long list of names to go over.

“Benchmark, because we are both named Ben, kept rising to the top. It seemed like something that fit pretty well and we decided on Benchmark.”

Tiana Cain is the third member of the shop’s partnership.

Benchmark Bicycle Supply Co. is located at 207 Randall Street and is open 10 a.m.-6 p.m. weekdays, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. on Saturday.
