Union County holds off Greer, 42-28, in matchup of Region unbeatens

Greer's Quay White scored three touchdowns and rushed for a game-leading 119 yards.

 

Brandon Thompson threw five touchdown passes, four to Shi Smith, and Union County built a 21-0 lead with 10:50 remaining the first half to turn back Greer.

Thompson threw scoring passes covering 55-, 37-, 15- and 16-yards to Smith. Smith accounted for 187 receiving yards. Thompson’s 22-yard scoring strike o Quadric Smith accounted for the five total TD passes.

De’Shaun Holmes scored on a 3-yard run to account for Union’s touchdowns. Blake Johnson connected on all six points after touchdowns kicks.

Quay White scored three of Greer’s four TDs on runs of 30-, 50- and 5 yards. White ran 20 times for 119 yards as the Yellow Jackets ran a total of 32 times for 104 net yards.

Greer quarterback Trey Houston moved Greer to the final margin when he scored on a 5-yard run with 6:06 left in the game.

Union built a 28-14 halftime lead and matched Greer’s 14 points in the second half.

Union County is 4-0 in the region and 5-4 overall. Greer is 2-1 in the region and 5-4 overall.

Greer will end the regular season with a losing road record at 2-3. The loss Friday night gives Greer its second two-game losing streak this season. The Yellow Jackets beat Clinton to end its season-opening two-game deficit.

The 14-point loss to Union now moves Greer to a deficit in scoring this year with 244 points scored while giving up 257 points, an average of 28.5 points relinquished per game.

Greer hosts rival Blue Ridge, 1-2 in the region and 2-8 overall, next Friday in the regular season final. Eastside beat Blue Ridge 56-22 Friday night.
