NEWPORT, R.I. – J.L. Mann Academy graduate and Greenville native Ensign Andrew Howard is serving with the U.S. Navy as a surface warfare officer (SWO), charged with leading the bridge watch team and ensuring safety of navigation on one of the Navy’s modern warships.

Howard completed the Junior Officer of the Deck (JOOD) course at Surface Warfare Officers School (SWOS) Aug. 3.

“I learned valuable lessons and skills that I will bring back to my ship and continue to improve,” said Howard. “It is comforting to know this class will be a mainstay in the SWO community in the foreseeable future.”

Howard obtained a bachelor's degree in business from the University of South Carolina in 2014 and was commissioned through Officer Candidate School.

He will soon report to the guided-missile destroyer USS Roosevelt homeported in Mayport, FL, and will serve in the ship’s operations department.

Howard is the son of Andrew and Ann Marie of Greenville.
