As a professional percussionist, Dalby taught that percussion instruments are played by striking or shaking. He started with the snare drum and showed how to use drum sticks to tap the drum in many ways, called "rudiments."

Dalby provided an opportunity for each student to also play the snare independently or with hand-over-hand assistance. He then demonstrated "traps," including a tambourine and a cow bell.

The lesson concluded with a jam session: Dalby on the drum set, Dail on piano, and all the students on bells singing and playing favorite holiday songs.
