Here's what Daniel's defense saw of Quay White before he zipped past them, and then all they saw was the back of his jersey.
Greer’s Quay White ran Daniel dizzy Friday night.
White, a junior running back, accounted for 517 total yards and five touchdowns against Daniel in a 42-28 Yellow Jackets victory at Dooley Field.
Greer handed Daniel its first loss of the season (3-1) while the Yellow Jackets evened their record at 2-2 in a non-region AAAA game.
White rushed for 354 yards and scored on touchdown runs of 42-, 80-, 70-, and 55-yards and added insult to Daniel’s misery when he returned a kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown.
White made it look easy. Greer’s offensive line provided a wide enough hole for White to get through at full speed and sprint the distance into the end zone, unscathed. No Daniel player had a chance once White got into the secondary.
Greer’s running game was in high gear. Running back Trey Houston gained 97 yards on 8 carries with his 52-yard TD run with three minutes left in the game proving to be Greer’s winning points.
Greer got the ball on turnovers with less than a minute remaining in the game when White again burst through the line and sped 55-yards for a TD with 21 seconds remaining.
Andres Toro kicked the final extra point, his fourth of the night. Toro missed one PAT when a bad snap from center resulted in him kicking the ball into the line. Matthew Huff ran in a two-point conversion for a 21-14 Greer lead with 7:57 left in the first half.
Greer’s defense, despite giving up four touchdowns, held Seneca to 237 total yards, 106 on the ground. Against Clinton last Friday, in a 21-7 win, Greer’s rushing defense held Clinton to minus 81 yards.
Greer averaged 9.8 yards per offensive play.
Penalties continue to haunt the Yellow Jackets. Greer was penalized 100 yards on 11 infractions.
• Jake Venables, junior outside linebacker for Daniel, is the son of Clemson defensive coordinator Brent Venables. Jake played the entire game.
• Will Swinney, senior wide receiver/cornerback, and Drew Swinney, junior wide receiver/cornerback, are sons of Clemson Head Football Coach Dabo Swinney. Drew caught three passes for 18 yards and Will made two catches for minus three yards.
• It was Hall of Fame night with seven former athletes inducted into the Greer High School Athletic Hall of Fame.
• Greer plays at Woodruff next Friday.
