The rebels and the empire used laser cannons to shoot it out on the big screen in “Star Wars,” but the weapons could soon move to the battlefield with the help of two Clemson University engineers who are receiving a combined $3.2 million from the Department of Defense.
CBL Charitable Foundation has awarded $10,000 higher education scholarships to three local students.
Greer High School seniors Candace Jensen and Victoria Schneider were both winners of the 2107 Robert F. Williams Scholarship, named for a past CBL Board Chairman and member of the South Carolina State Board of Education. Jensen will attend the University of Georgia, while Schneider will attend Clemson University.
The CBL Charitable Foundation has donated $6,000 to the Greer Christian Learning Center.
The Learning Center “provides students in public schools an opportunity to embrace the gospel, to grow in Christian Maturity and to apply Biblical principles to their lives, families and communities.”
Riverside Middle School students are busy completing end of the year projects.
Seventh-grade social studies classes experienced a day of Art in History by completing butterfly paintings as part of their unit on the Holocaust.
GPD officers arrested Edwin Anthony Thomas, 51, Friday for third-degree assault and battery for an incident that took place at Greer Middle School sometime one week before spring break, according to a police report and arrest warrant. Thomas was a teacher at Greer Middle School at the time of the alleged incident, according to police.
Police were contacted when allegations surfaced. Thomas was placed on administration leave from Greenville County School and has since resigned his position. The district hired Thomas in August 2015.
The Greater Greer Education Foundation awarded $13,000 in scholarships to 13 students from six high schools in the Greater Greer area Tuesday afternoon at Greer City Hall.
Students were selected by the guidance department of each school and submitted to the Foundation. The Foundation in turn will present scholarship funds to the technical school or college on behalf of the student.
Former Greer High School Principal Marion Waters was honored Wednesday night as the school's Commons/Cafeteria was officially named “Marion Waters Commons”.
Waters, who was the principal at Greer High School for 22 years until his retirement last year, was on hand with family and friends.
North Greenville University graduated the following greater Greer students on May 5.

Rayshad Dorsey and Brayton Gregory made the most of their time at Clemson by getting involved and excelling in the classroom. This fall, the two will pursue their master’s degrees from Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design, and both will be attending on full scholarships. Harvard’s graduate program is ranked best in the country by DesignIntelligence.
Twelve Riverside High School athletes signed today to continue their athletic career in college in the fall.
Eight of the athletes will stay in state while four will attend out-of-state schools.
Two teens were charged in the shooting death of a Byrnes High School student and Spartanburg County Sheriff Chuck Wright said there was a planned fight at a location to resolve an issue when guns were brought out.
However, a deputy refuted that claim stating the shooting materialized from an earlier disagreement and both parties of the issue agreed to meet settle the argument.

Students from St. Joseph’s Catholic School in Greenville donated their time and talent to paint a mural for hearing patients at Clarity, a partner with the Center for Developmental Services (CDS).
The art students, under the direction of Deborah Pickard, painted a beach scene representing the South Carolina coastline.
Greer Mayor Rick Danner told more than 350 North Greenville University graduates commitment and dedication is the key to their continued success. Danner was the keynote speaker at the Melvin and Dollie Younts Stadium on the NGU campus.
Danner shared with the assembled group that for every 100 students nationally that started their bachelor of arts or bachelor of science degree the same time these graduates did, only 42 percent will be graduating. For the first generation graduates, only 25 percent will graduate.

Each year, The Mountain Laurel editors and staff develop a general theme, discover methods for depicting this concept in graphic design and cover, and carry out the complete, real-world process of starting from scratch (or “with nothing”), and ending with a finished book.
John Partin and Andrew Jay Weaver were honored at the annual awards day ceremony at North Greenville University.
Partin was honored with the Daughters of the American Revolution Outstanding Work in American History Award. The mission of the Daughters of the American Revolution is to promote historic preservation, education, and patriotism. An award is given annually to an outstanding student taking American History.
After nearly eight months of preparation and the installation of 2,994 solar panels, Furman University’s new $1.7 million solar facility has gone online and is supplying electrical power to the campus.
The solar farm, which is located on six acres of land near the main campus entrance on Poinsett Highway, is the largest solar installation on a college campus in South Carolina. The university announced its plans to construct the solar facility in August 2016.
North Greenville University honored students at its annual awards day. Area honorees include:
• Carolina Newkirk was presented the Excellence in Intercultural Studies Award. The annual award is given to the student who is an intercultural studies major for at least half their academic career at NGU, must be in good standing with the university, must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0, and a 3.5 GPA in his or her Intercultural Studies major core of courses.

North Greenville University alumni and friend were honored by the university’s alumni association during an awards ceremony held on the campus during a chapel service last month.
