5 Greer athletes sign to continue sports career

Greer High School had a big spring sports signing day with five students continuing to play in college. Two students graduated after only three years.

Greer High School had a big spring sports signing day with five students continuing to play in college. Two students graduated after only three years.

 

 

Five Greer High School athletes, two graduating a year earlier, have signed academic and sports letters of intent to continue their athletic careers in college.

Brooke Wade
North Greenville University

Brooke Wade, already the recipient of the Foothills Scholarship from North Greenville University announced last week, also signed to continue her athletic career in softball.

Wade, of Greer High School, is a three-sports standout – volleyball, basketball and softball.

She is a four-year starter as pitcher, first baseman and outfielder. She is averaging .456, 94 runs scored, 100 hits (5 home runs) 61 runs-batted-in, 54 walks and 26 stolen bases.  She has 79 strikeouts in pitching.

She was named the Wendy’s High School Heisman school winner this year (2015-2016), all Region II-AAA her sophomore and junior seasons.

Wade has earned many Region-II, school and state athletic awards.

Academically, Wade has earned many awards including Rotary Top 10 from 2012-2016, Beta Club and National Honor Society. Community service includes the Soup Kitchen, Meals on Wheels and Peer Tutoring at GHS. She has also been involved in student government.

Collin "Bo" Roberts
Limestone University

Collin “Bo” Roberts signed to play baseball at Limestone University.

Roberts, a five-year starter, played infield and outfield for Greer with a career batting average of .336 – leading the team in 2013 (.403) and 2014 (.443).

He has been All-Region II-AAA the past three years and is a member of the Beta Club and National Honor Society. He has been a Peer Tutor.

Diana Cedilla
Spartanburg Methodist College

Diana Cedilla signed to play soccer at Spartanburg Methodist College and plan to transfer to Converse College for her last two years.

Cedilla, a three-year varsity starter is graduating a year early.

She started playing defensive midfield her freshman year, recognized best defender her sophomore season and chosen captain her senior year and an alternate in the SC North/South Senior All-Star Game.

Cedilla is a member of the National Honor Society and participates in peer tutoring, service learning, and was voted into Greer Junior Cotillion.

Nomi Henkin
Converse College

Leah Naomi Henkin signed to play soccer at Converse College.

She is a three-year varsity starter for Greer High School and is graduating a year early.

Her junior year, Henkin was selected as an All-Region II-AAA player and selected as senior captain and played club soccer for Furman United.

Henkin is a member of Beta Club and Leo Club.

Sam Merrell
USC Upstate

Sam Merrell is signing is national letter of intent to play golf at USC Upstate.

Merrell has played on the varsity for five years and has been the team's number one player the last three years.

He has competed in numerous Upstate events, including the Greenville County Amateur and the Upstate Amateur Championships, while winning several South Carolina Junior Golf Association events.

He finished first in the summer-long point standings earning a spot in the SCJGA's All-Star Championship. He finished sixth place in the Greenville County High School Championship.

Merrell is ranked No. 136 in the SCJGA April rankings.

Merrell compiled a 3.5 grade point average in honor classes. He is the son of Joey and Lisa Merrell.
