Baseball head coach Travis Henson, middle, presented the awards to the Blue Ridge Tigers at their team banquet last Thursday. Honored, left to right, were Ty Montgomery, Alex Williams, Zach Byer and Robert Westenrieder.
First-year coach Travis Henson coached the Tigers to a 16-7 record. He previously coached at Landrum High School, North Greenville University and as an assistant for the Tigers in 2012.
Byer, a senior and Limestone College signee, was awarded the Jerry Henson Tiger Coaches Award. It is based on leadership, attitude, work ethic, respect, performance in the classroom as well as on the field, and a fighting tiger spirit.
Montgomery, a junior, received the Golden Glove Award. As the Tigers’ catcher, Montgomery had 147 putouts, 12 assists and only 3 errors all season. Montgomery was also selected to the Peach Blossom Region II 3A team and a finalist for the SC Baseball Coaches Association All State team.
Williams, a junior, was the Silver Slugger Award Winner. Williams led the team with 31 hits and 17 walks. He also led the team with a season-high .425 batting average, a .533 on base percentage, scored 20 runs and stole 9 bases. He was named to the Upstate-Diamond Classic All-Tournament Team, and a finalist for the SC Baseball Coaches Association All-State Team.
Westenrieder, a junior, was awarded the King of the Hill Pitching Award. Westenrieder led the team pitching 50.2 innings. He recorded 5 wins with 2 saves. Westenrieder lead the team with 56 strikeouts and 21 walks. He was selected to the Peach blossom Region II 3A team, the Upstate-Diamond Classic All-Tournament Team, and a finalist for the SC Baseball Coaches Association All State team.
