The X4 is in a concept phase but will become BMW's next production vehicle to be produced from the BMW Manufacturng Co. Greer plant.
“We have achieved our most successful April worldwide sales ever, despite the current weakness of some car markets in Europe,” said Ian Robertson, BMW member of the board of management.
Group sales gained in all the company's major markets last month. European sales grew 3 percent to 69,957 vehicles. U.S. volume was up 8 percent to 29,011 and sales in China grew 11 percent to 30,311.
Through April, BMW brand's volume rose 7 percent to 512,000.
The X4, introduced as a concept vehicle at the Shanghai Auto Show last month, will be the next production model assembled in Greer. Production is expected to begin late this year or in 2014.
BMW Manufacturing Co. is undergoing a $900 million expansion including a 170,000 square-foot expansion to the body shop and 300,000 square-feet added to the paint shop.
In preparation for the rollout, BMW is building a $134 million, 400,000 square foot warehouse at the Greer Inland Port. The warehouse will be used to ship the vehicles by kits, three to a container, to Charleston. From their the containers will be exported.
The inland port and warehouse are targeted for a Sept. 1 launch.
