BMW Manufacturing, SC Works to host recruitment event

BMW Manufacturing and SC Works will host a recruitment event for equipment maintenance technicians on Tuesday, Feb. 6, 10 a.m. – 6 p.m., at the SC Works office at 225 S. Pleasantburg Drive in Greenville.

 To attend the recruitment event, applicants must first be registered at SCWORKS.org. SC Works will screen applicants to determine eligibility. If eligible, applicants will receive an invitation to attend the Feb. 6 event, during which they will complete a computer-based technical knowledge assessment. Results of the assessment will be provided onsite. If successful, the candidate will be scheduled to take a hands-on electrical troubleshooting proficiency test at a later date.

GGEF awards 13 $1,000 scholarships to Greer area students

The Greater Greer Education Foundation awarded $13,000 in scholarships to 13 students from six high schools in the Greater Greer area Tuesday afternoon at Greer City Hall.

 Students were selected by the guidance department of each school and submitted to the Foundation. The Foundation in turn will present scholarship funds to the technical school or college on behalf of the student.

Blue Note Lollipops is all about jazz

The "cool cats" of the Greenville Symphony Orchestra Jazz Quartet will take Summer Lollipop-goers on a smooth, musical trip that introduces them to the great American art form known as "jazz," including its origins as well as how this genre has grown in popularity and appreciation.

Two performances will be offered: a "twilight" concert at the Hughes Main Library in downtown Greenville on Monday, August 1 at 7 p.m., and an afternoon concert at the Central-Clemson Regional Library in Central on Tuesday, August 2 at 2:30 p.m.

$1 billion, X7, 800 jobs is BMW announcement heard around the world

Study: $16.6 billion is BMW annual impact in South Carolina

A new study just released by the Moore School of Business at the University of South Carolina, reports that the BMW Group has a $16.6 billion annual impact on the state economy. Its presence in South Carolina supports more than 30,000 jobs throughout the state.

The study found that for every job created at the Greer plant, an additional three jobs are created elsewhere in South Carolina through the economic multiplier effect.

USC Upstate, BMW partner to offer Academic Outreach Camp for high school seniors

Rising high school seniors in Cherokee, Greenville and Spartanburg counties, with an interest in the real world applications of mathematics and statistics to manufacturing and healthcare processes, are invited to apply to the two-week USC Upstate/BMW Manufacturing Academic Outreach Camp, to be held June 9-13 and June 16-20. 

The camp, now in its fourth year, offers a high quality program that lets students from the Upstate learn skills that can be applied throughout their career. The camp will be held at USC Upstate’s George Dean Johnson Jr. College of Business and Economics in downtown Spartanburg from 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., but will also involve trips to the BMW Manufacturing facility and BMW Performance Center in Greer, as well as to USC Upstate's main campus.

Christofferson's 'incredible legacy' is a pathway to the future

Stan Christofferson and his daughter, Katie, shared a few moments between vists from guests at the Stand Up For Stan fundraiser on March 29. Katie delivered Stan his first grandson earlier this spring.

Stan Christofferson, owner of the Great Bay Oyster House, was an easy mark for people seeking help with a project that needed some infusion of money or contributions of goods. He was a good place to start because it would prove to be a positive beginning for a community drive.

“I would walk into Stan’s office and he would say, ‘you’re here again? How much do I owe you now chief?’ Anytime we needed something or wanted help Stan was there for us,” Greer Police Chief Dan Reynolds said. Reynolds laughed at the recurring visits that resulted in both teasing each other. Cops for Tots and other fundraisers were always the winners and Stan “provided valuable assistance to us.”

Flanagan needs 3 playoff holes to win BMW Pro-Am
MAY 20, 2012

Nick Flanagan earned $108,000 today by winning the BMW Pro-AM at Thornblade Club. That moved him to 11th on the Nationwide Tour money list. He also won the tournament in 2007.

Australian Nick Flanagan won the 12th annual BMW Charity Pro-Am  golf tournament held at Thornblade Club today, but it didn’t come easy. It took three playoff holes against fellow Australian Cameron Percy before Flanagan notched his first win of the year. Flanagan also won the tournament in 2007. He finished the tournament at -15 under par (67, 70, 67, 67).

The win earned Flanagan $108,000 and moved him to 11th on the Nationwide Tour money list. The top 25 money leaders on the Nationwide Tour automatically earn playing status on the PGA TOUR in 2013.

Celebrity course rotations for the May 17-20 BMW Charity Pro-Am golf tournament were announced today as were updates to the celebrity list.

First-time participants include actor Richard Schiff of NBC’s The West Wing, actor Chris Rich of Reba and former major league (Boston Red Sox, St. Louis Cardinals, Los Angeles Dodgers and San Francisco Giants) outfielder Reggie Smith. Returning to the tournament are actress Paula Trickey of USA Network’s Pacific Blue and actor Andy Buckley of The Office. Lucas Black, Javier Colon, Greg Kinnear and Bruce Greenwood have had to withdraw from the tournament due to schedule conflicts.

Actor Anthony Anderson is currently a member of NBC’s Emmy Award-winning drama "Law & Order". Anderson plays Detective Kevin Bernard opposite Jeremy Sisto as Detective Cyrus Lupo. Anderson has appeared in over 20 films including "Transformers" and "The Departed". This will be Anderson’s first time participating in the tournament.

Twenty-four celebrities have committed for the 12th annual BMW Charity Pro-Am golf tournament May 17-20. The announcement was made today as Oobe, a tournament sponsor, presented a check for $60,000 to the tournament at Greer’s Thornblade Club.

Celebrities included are first-time participants:  actor Anthony Anderson of NBC’s Emmy Award-winning drama “Law & Order”, Rascal Flatts bass guitarist Jay DeMarcus, actor Danny Masterson of TBS’s “That ‘70s Show”, actor Grant Show of FOX’s “Melrose Place”, and Holly Sonders, host of Golf Channel’s “Morning Drive”.

Greer's X5 leads BMW Group to best March ever

The BMW X5 SAV, manufactured in Greer at the BMW Manufacturing Co. was the best performing vehicle in March sales, announced BMW Group in the U.S. (BMW and Mini combined). X5 sales were up 41.3 percent to 2,841 vehicles.

That led March sales of 29,806 vehicles, an increase of 13 percent from the 26,382 vehicles sold in the same month a year ago.  Year-to-date, the BMW Group achieved its best first quarter sales since the record year of 2007 retailing 75,729 vehicles, up 16.6 percent compared to 64,957 vehicles sold in the first three months of 2011.

BB&T receives inaugural Greer Development Chairman's Award

John Bolt, Vice President of BB&T in Greer, accepted the inaugural Greer Economic Development Chairman’s Award today on behalf of the bank at the GDC's 10th anniversary luncheon at City Hall.

Reno Deaton, GDC Executive Director, gave the annual report that reflected positive gains in 2011 and good early growth in the first quarter this year. Dennis Hennett, vice chairman of the board is rotating off to concentrate on his duties as CEO at Greer State Bank. Hennett retired and was recalled to lead the bank. Dave Edwards, Executive Director at the Greenville-Spartanburg Airport in Greer, has been approved as Hennett’s replacement.

Southwest toasted by GSP on one-year anniversary

Dave Edwards led a toast to Southwest Airline’s one-year anniversary today at Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport in Greer.

"Southwest has spurred tremendous growth and revitalized the airport," Edwards, Executive Director at GSP Airport District, said. "Air traffic is up 38 percent since last year and we're up 40 percent in January. It's hard to keep with it. It's exciting to be in this growth mode."

BMW Greer X models continue record Group pace

BMW Group continues to set new monthly standards with its BMW, Mini and Rolls-Royce brand automobiles delivered worldwide. 

A total of 107,359 BMW brand vehicles were sold worldwide in February, an increase of 12.5 percent (previous year 95,427). Year-to-date, sales are 9.3 percent higher at 203,545 vehicles than for the same period last year (186,285).

Greer's BMW Manufacturing is No. 1 world automotive exporter

A BMW X3 and X5, assembled at Greer's BMW Manufacturing Co., are loaded onto a ship at the Port of Charleston.

BMW Manufacturing Co., headquartered in Greer, announced today that the export value of its passenger vehicles through the Port of Charleston in 2011 totaled $7.4 billion, confirming the company’s South Carolina facility as the leading U.S. automotive exporter.

According to data from the U.S. Department of Commerce, it represents a 68 percent increase over BMW's 2010 value. In 2011, over 192,000 vehicles were exported from its South Carolina plant.

Residential growth takes root near Village at Pelham

Dillard Creek Crossing has sold almost half of its 50 homes constructed behind Village at Pelham Hospital on Westmoreland Road.

A residential building uptick has Greer city and business leaders taking notice. Most importantly it has families purchasing newly-constructed homes as fast as they are marketed. 

Dillard Creek Crossing has 50 new homes either completed or in construction phases while Village at Bent Creek has begun construction for 58 new homes. At the same time Mungo builders remain committed to 52 single-family patio homes to be built off Brushy Creek Road and S. Suber Road.

2013 X6 SAV headed to showrooms in spring

The new design of the 2013 X6 SAV was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show today.

BMW presented its 2013 BMW X6 Activity Coupe today at the Geneva Motor Show. The vehicle has two engines featuring BMW TwinPower Turbo Technology and xDrive, the intelligent all-wheel-drive system.

Since its market launch three years ago, more than 150,000 SAVs have been sold globally with over 20,000 sold in the U.S.

Greer's BMW-produced vehicles pave way for best January sales

Greer's BMW Manufacturing Co.-produced vehicles helped steer BMW Group to its best ever January sales. BMW reported sales last month of 96,183 vehicles, a 5.9 percent increase from the 90,858 sold the same time last year.

The BMW X5, X6 and X3 all showed increases. The X3 showed a 56 percent January increase with 9,348 vehicles sold (5,984 last year). The X5 has an 8.3 percent growth in sales with 8,872 units sold (8,194 last year) and X6 sales were up 5 percent to 3,372 (3,211 last year).
