Bryn Carrier, a 9th grader from Greer, earned a trip to Tampa to compete as a finalist in the Southern Division of the National Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) Junior Woodwind competition.
Bryn, the daughter of Randy and Julie Carrier of Greer, earned this opportunity after being selected the representative of the State Junior Woodwinds Competition of the South Carolina Music Teachers Association held at Coker College in Hartsville. She was first alternate in this competition last year.
Bryn has been studying oboe for four years and is a student of Mary AllyeB Purtle in Greenville.
Her mother, Julie, will serve as her personal accompanist for the competition and they will be performing Domenico Cimarosa’s Concerto in C Major, movements I and II, the first movement of Paul Hindemith’s Sonata for oboe, and Georges Guilhaud’s First Concertino for oboe.
A member of the BJA High School Band and Orchestra, Bryn has distinguished herself among her peers in musical achievement. She has been the principal oboist for the Greenville County Philharmonic Youth Orchestra for the past two years, as well as a Region and All-State Band member for the past three years.
Bryn was chosen along with a select few high school students to play with the U.S. Army Field Band and Soldier’s Chorus in a concert at Bob Jones University. Bryn also enjoys singing, playing oboe and ministering in the church orchestra at Morningside Baptist Church in Greenville.
The winner of the Southern Division competition will compete in the National Finals during the MTNA National Conference in San Antonio, Tex., in April 2016.
