The Greer Fire Department reported a controlled burn by the forestry department is the reason smoke is hovering over the greater Greer area.
“Just about every fire department in the Upstate has been out looking for fires,” Lt. Dwayne Brown, at the GFD said Sunday evening. “We’ve been out looking for about 30 fires, Boiling Springs has and others.”
Union County reportedly is burning about 2,000-2,500 acres, according to Brown. “It’s what we’re hearing from other dispatchers,” Brown said.
Carl Howell, Greer Deputy Fire Marshal, said the smoke appears to be hanging around on the other side of Hwy. 101 of Greer and north of Suber Road and Hammett Bridge Road.
Calls were coming in frequently to the GFD and GreerToday.com reporting smoke mostly overhanging Greer and I-85. Residents downtown observed smoke throughout the business district.
The forestry department has not released any details about the burn or to nearby municipalities.
