Council approved 7-0 its support Tuesday night for a letter of application. Steve Owens, Director of Communications at the City of Greer, said it gives Greer the opportunity to compete for a grant through the Land and Water Conversation Fund (LWCF). “The application process is a highly competitive process,” Owens said.
The grant totals $400,000 with the city reimbursed $200,000 or 50 percent of the total project cost. Ann Cunningham, Director of Parks and Recreation, told council the requested funds would support the demolition of the current press box/restrooms/concessions facility and construction of a new multi-function building. Deadline to complete the project, upon the grant’s approval, is December 2016.
The LWCF program provides matching grants to states and local governments for the acquisition and development of public outdoor recreation areas and facilities (as well as funding for shared federal land acquisition and conservation strategies).
To receive the grant a commitment letter from the city affirms its participation by initially funding the project. Funds become available upon receipt of the confirmation.
Correction: The report that the grant had already been approved was incorrect in an earlier GreerToday.com report.
