Eddie Harvey's book, “Open Windows: Hum of the Mill, An Occasional Train” is about life in Greer during his time as a student at Greer High School and beyond.
Harvey traveled down memory lane to share this story about his first car.
“In 1958, South Carolina was dumb enough to give me a driver’s license at 14 years old and Mom taught me how to drive a stick shift in the Greer Mill parking lot.
My first car soon followed. A 1939 Ford Coach that I purchased for $80 cash from Dean Hill's Used Cars. $40 was money earned on my Greenville Piedmont route and $40 was borrowed from Mom's sewing money.
The funny thing about that car was, it was painted black on one side, from the hood, across the top and down the trunk lid and the other side was old dull primer paint.
It was my Greer High transportation, plus my pride and joy. I always parked with the shiny side to the street, or drove a block and turned around if I passed a pretty girl walking.”
There will be prizes for a myriad of categories. Some of the more recognizable are:
• Longest distance traveled to reunion by GHS grad.
• Oldest GHS graduate in attendance.
• Couple who has been married the longest.
