Retiring Greer Fire Chief Chris Harvey introduces new fire chief Dorian Flowers.

The City of Greer has hired Dorian Flowers of Hendersonville, N.C., as the fire chief to fill the upcoming vacancy created by Chris Harvey’s retirement. Flowers held the same position in Hendersonville.

City Administrator Ed Driggers made the announcement through an email to media and on the fire department’s web site. Hendersonville City Council meets this evening where the announcement is expected to be made public.

Flowers has a Master of Public Administration degree with a concentration in fire service administration from Anna Maria College in Paxton, Mass. He holds a B.S. in business administration from the University of Mount Olive in N.C., and Associates in Applied Science in Fire Science Technology from Pikes Peak (Colorado Springs, Colo.) Community College.

Flowers completed his third year in the National Fire Academy Executive Fire Officer Program and is working towards his Chief Fire Officer Designation through the Center for Public Safety Excellence.

“Greer is on a path for continued growth and Greer has much to offer its residents, visitors, and employees,” the statement from Flowers read. “Greer has a very dedicated fire department that is ready for the challenges associated with change. I plan to bring an opportunity for the staff to work collaboratively with the fire chief and help develop the direction of the department.”

Flowers was selected from among 75 applicants throughout the southeast and the Carolinas, according to Driggers’ announcement.

“Our current Fire Chief, Chris Harvey, has done an outstanding job of leading the Greer Fire Department. I believe Chief Flowers will continue and expand the high level of service our community has come to expect,” Driggers stated.

Flowers has more than 23 years of experience with the fire service. He was chosen Hendersonville Fire Chief in June 2011. Flowers was at the New Hanover County Fire Rescue in Wilmington, N.C., the 13 years before he came to Hendersonville.

Flowers will begin service at the Greer Fire Department on Monday, April 27. He will assume command of the department upon Harvey’s retirement on May 1.
