The Greater Greer Chamber of Commerce adds two new members to its team. Mark King joins the organization as interim president/CEO and Josh Shaffer will join the Chamber as director of membership development.
A former chairman of the board of the Greater Greer Chamber of Commerce, King will serve as acting chief executive officer while the Chamber’s selection committee searches for a permanent successor. King is a graduate of Charleston Southern University and Southeastern Seminary. He is certified in QuickBooks software, and started his own business, King Consulting, in 2005.
The Greater Greer Education Foundation raised $42,235 at its Education Gala held Oct. 26 at the Cannon Centre.
The Gala is the Foundation’s only fundraising event.
Twist Salon, located at 215 West Wade Hampton Blvd in Greer, held its Ribbon Cutting on Wednesday.
Twist Salon offers a range of services including cuts, color, perms, waxing, smoothing treatments, and corrective color. The salon also offers nail services including OPI gel polish and Creative Nail Shellac. Products offered will include Joico, Kenra, Goldwell, Redkin, shampoos, conditioners and styling products, as well as OPI and Creative Nail.
The Greater Greer Chamber of Commerce picked up two prestigious awards at the Carolinas Association of Chamber of Commerce (CACCE) conference in Pawleys Island today.
Greer earned the inaugural Outstanding Chamber of the Year for the CACCE and was recognized for winning the Communications of Year program for last January’s annual banquet with Gov. Nikki Haley the guest speaker.
Mark Owens, 27, has been promoted to Vice President for the Greater Greer Chamber of Commerce, effective immediately. Owens, formerly Director of Events and the Director of Business Development, will maintain those responsibilities with added duties including staff management.
“This is a position we have been working on since December,” Allen Smith, Executive Director and CEO of the chamber. Smith became the chamber head in June 2010.
Emily Crowley of Riverside High School was presented a $500 scholarship by the Leadership Greer Class XXXII this afternoon at the Greater Greer Chamber of Commerce. Mitsubishi added $500 more last Friday to make the grant $1,000.
Crowley, Senior Class President, will attend the College of Charleston and major in International Studies with an emphasis on environmental studies. “I’m interested in getting into a non-profit and helping the environment,” Crowley said.
Stan Christofferson, owner of the Great Bay Oyster House, was an easy mark for people seeking help with a project that needed some infusion of money or contributions of goods. He was a good place to start because it would prove to be a positive beginning for a community drive.
“I would walk into Stan’s office and he would say, ‘you’re here again? How much do I owe you now chief?’ Anytime we needed something or wanted help Stan was there for us,” Greer Police Chief Dan Reynolds said. Reynolds laughed at the recurring visits that resulted in both teasing each other. Cops for Tots and other fundraisers were always the winners and Stan “provided valuable assistance to us.”
Nathan Wade II, an economics major at Furman University, has been chosen to serve as an intern at the Greater Greer Chamber of Commerce through a partnership between the university and the chamber.
Wade began his work on May 14 and will assist the staff in various ways including administrative support, membership retention, office organization and marketing.
Groundsmaster at 1443 South Batesville Road will host a Pelham Power Breakfast 8-9 a.m. Wednesday. The breakfast is free for Greater Greer Chamber of Commerce members and $10 for non-members. Call 877-3131 for more information.

Aaron Tippin made a rockin' return to his hometown of Greer tonight performing at the Village Hospital Greer Family Fest. An energetic crowd, estimated at 6,500 by public safety officers, gave Tippin a rousing welcome.
Tippin performed his hits and shared the stories behind each song. He frequently waved to his friends and acquaintances in the crowd, often calling them by name.

Sixteen restaurants and food vendors will be at the Village Hospital Greer Family Fest May 4-5. Seven restaurants will occupy the Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport Food Court in City Park. Nine other vendors will be located throughout the festival.

Aaron Tippin is the designated National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) artist for nearly 600,000 students across the United States and Canada who will join together in song in a collaborative show of support for music education on Monday, May 7.
Tippin is scheduled to perform at the Village Hospital Greer Family Fest on Saturday May 5 at 8 p.m., two days before the NAMM event.

The space shuttle Discovery attached to its 747 transport aircraft passes over Washington, D.C. today.
The shuttle will become an exhibit at the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum. The Discovery, along with the rest of the shuttle fleet, has been retired from active service after 32 years of operations.
