The Greer Police Department has donated proceeds from its annual softball tournament to the family of a slain Greenville police officer. Additionally, the Citizens Police Academy is funding two Greenville officers to the national convention this week.
The family of Greenville Police Officer Allen Jacobs, who was killed in the line of duty March 18, was presented a $6,000 check from Greer’s annual Upstate Law Enforcement Memorial Softball Tournament. “The funds are something we never want to give because of why they are raised,” Capt. Matt Hamby said. “We hope in some small way it will help the officer’s family. We’re honored to be in a position to do this.”
The Greer Citizens Police Academy, separately, also contributed $2,800 for two Greenville city police officers to attend this week’s national citizens conference in Utah in honor of Jacobs. All expenses and convention fees were covered with the donation.
“Greenville has a strong citizens police academy and we have a great relationship with them,” said Lt. Jim Holcombe, who founded Greer’s organization seven years ago.” Our alumni proposed to send two of their officers to the convention.”
Holcombe, Dale Haule, Angie Childers, Robert Lewis and Jessica Crawford are at the convention, representing Greer PD, that concludes tonight in Midway, Utah.
The academies allow citizens to understand and appreciate the daily duties and responsibilities of police officers. The Greer Alumni Association has embraced the relationship and assists the department in a variety of roles.
Jacobs was the father of two boys, Michael (6) and Dillon (5) and his wife, Meghan, is expecting a girl in July.
This year’s softball tournament is scheduled in August with law enforcement agencies from the upstate scheduled to participate.
