Greer residents will vote on extending Sunday alcohol sales to grocery and convenience stores on a referendum to be placed on the November ballot. Greer City Council voted 5-1 Tuesday night, with Councilman Wayne Griffin voting no and Mayor Rick Danner absent.
Council members whizzed through the second reading with Jay Arrowood, Lee Dumas and Judy Albert offering brief comments favoring the referendum. Wryley Bettis, pro small business, voiced his approval during the first reading while Griffin objected to Sunday alcohol sales.
City Council voted 6-1 (Griffin opposed) in the first reading.
• Spartanburg Council voters will also vote on a referendum to allow Sunday alcohol sales.
• Greenville County did not have the needed 7,500 signatures on a petition to put Sunday alcohol sales on the ballot.
In other council action:
• Awarded Hoover Buildings of Greer low bid of $32,000 for a 30x50x10 storage building at Greer Fire Department station No. 2 on Hood Road. The building will store equipment accumulated over past years. Five bids were received.
• Approved, 6-0, four parcels of land, 421 – 445 South Suber Road, on second and final reading for annexation and R-12 zoning to build 64 units of single family homes.
• Approved, 6-0, for annexation and R-12 zoning, for 14.7 acres owned by Emmanuel Baptist Church at 445 S. Suber Road with the purpose to build single family homes. Developers will present their request at September’s Planning Commission meeting.
• Approved, 6-0, the City of Greer to enter into an agreement with Greenville County to obtain urban county status for continuation of Community Development Block Grants (CDBG) and HOME Partnership Funds for fiscal years 2015-2017.
