The battle in the trenches was vicious.
A rare Blue Ridge getaway from Greer's defense.
A jump ball for a high pass.
Greer defense was a thorn all night in Blue Ridge's offense.
Trey Houston passed for five touchdowns and Greer’s defense held Blue Ridge to minus 23 yards on 30 rushes. It’s the second time this season Greer has held its opponent to minus rushing yards – the first time versus Clinton with - 82 yards.
“Our number one goal was to try to be successful at something,” Greer Head Coach Will Young said.
“I thought we came out and established some things early,” Young said. “We ran the football and threw the football. I thought that was very good.”
Ethan Alexander intercepted two passes that led to Greer touchdowns and Brodie Wright’s fumble recovery led to a third score as Greer coasted to the win.
“Generally when we get good field position we have a high percentage of scoring,” Young said. “We haven’t had many turnovers this year and we’ve not had many people make mistakes against us this year. They did tonight and we cashed in.”
Even Noah Hannon, career offensive lineman, got to carry the ball on one play, a two-yard gain, with 6:35 remaining in the third quarter when the game was all but decided with Greer leading, 42-6.
“The play was called ‘Boss’,” Hannon said. “We only practiced it three times last week. There wasn’t a count.”
Young laughed when asked if Hannon would see more carries. “When he becomes a better running back,” Young said with a smile. “It’s probably the last time he runs it.”
Young was an All-America lineman at Clemson and said he never ran the ball. “We try to pick a senior here and get them in for one carry,” Young said.
Greer won’t play again until Nov. 18, in its first round of the state playoffs. Greer will most likely play the loser of next week’s Airport vs. North August game.
Blue Ridge will travel to play at South Aiken in the first round. South Aiken is 9-0 and plays a makeup game at Orangeburg-Wilkinson Friday.
The South Carolina High School League moved the regular season back one week for high schools to makeup games postponed by Hurricane Matthew. That gives the Yellow Jackets three weeks before its next game.
Houston connected on touchdown passes to Cameron Kelly for 30 and 10 yards, 30 yards to Alex Syphertt, 17 yards to Cameron Martin and 23 yards to Quay White.
Houston threw for 272 yards completing18 of 24 passes.
Greer’s other two touchdowns came on a 23-yard Quay Wright run in the first quarter and a Dre Williams 38-yard run.
Greer accumulated 400 offensive yards totaling 8 yards per play.
Blue Ridge’s touchdown came on a Jake Smith 19-yard pass play to Sonny Stevens in the second quarter.
Greer’s players will have off Monday and have an intrasquad scrimmage next Thursday, Young said.
Greer’s regular season record is 6-4 and 3-1 in the region. Blue Ridge finished 2-9 overall and 1-3 in the region.
