County Line barbecue is among the 39 teams registered from five states competiting for money and trophy prizes.
Nard's Backyard BBQ, from Piedmont, will return for the third year.
The third annual Sooie’t Relief, a Kansas City Barbecue Society-sanctioned competition will be held Friday and Saturday in downtown Greer.
A Wing Fling competition (Friday at 6 p.m.) returns after several years’ absence with a blind taste test. Also new this year is the CPW Centennial 5k (Saturday, 8 a.m.). Music on both days, amusements and a Car Show on Saturday offer family-friendly entertainment. Wristbands for rides are $10 both days.

Hours are 6-10 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. – 10 p.m. Saturday. Organizers expect a larger turnout than year’s past since this is the first year the festival will not conflict with the first week of high school or college football. Greer area schools begin the regular season Aug. 30, with the exception of Byrnes playing Apopka, Fla., Saturday night, well after the cooking competition ends. College football opens the following week.
All proceeds benefit Greer Relief.
Competitive cooking features chicken, pork ribs, pork and beef brisket and a Taster’s Choice competition. Competitors, from throughout the southeast, will cook their barbecue throughout the night with judging beginning about noon Saturday. The grand champion wins $1,800.
