A snapshot of Greer and Americana were decked out in red, white and blue Monday morning.
The 19th Annual Kids Parade was held under a bright sun with warming temperatures that virtually had children and adults of all ages along the parade route that covered the Arlington-Davenport neighborhood.
“I believe this is the biggest parade yet,” said Greer Mayor Rick Danner. Hundreds of parade goers were almost a city block deep when it started shortly after 10 a.m.
While tots wore oversized hats, adults fashioned undersized hats with virtually all sporting the colors of the flag.
Along the approximately mile-long route neighbors sat curbside in chairs and others would wave to the participants from their porches or under trees.
The Greer Police Department had a patrol unit in the lead to provide safety and stop traffic on the side streets.
Danner said the parade is for parents and children to enjoy a leisurely stroll around the neighborhood with children on bikes and in strollers.
Cookies, popsicles and water were provided at the end of the parade.
The parade was held without incident, including a City Council ordinance prohibiting the use of silly string and tossing of candy to observers.
Motorized vehicles will be prohibited in future Arlington-Davenport neighborhood parades for safety purposes.
Missing this year was a fixture at all the parades. Alvin Howell, father of Mayor Rick Danner’s wife, Rita, died in late May. A moment of silence was held in Howell’s memory.
The July 4, 2017 parade is scheduled on a Tuesday for a 10 a.m. start.
