The Greer Children's Theater is preparing for its adaptation of Disney and Cameron Mackintosh's "Mary Poppins" while casting and rehearsals for the children's theater's rendition of Disney's "Lion King Jr." are set for November.

"Mary Poppins" performances at the J. Harley Bonds Career Center are Nov. 6-8 and 13-15. Friday and Saturday shows are 7 p.m. and Sunday shows at 2 p.m.

"As soon as Mary Poppins closes we will be auditioning for The Lion King," Greer Cultural Arts Supervisor Robin Byouk said. "It's an interesting show because there are 22 lessons to do with the cast before we rehearse the play, based on history and design and how 'The Lion King" came about."

Byouk attended the Junior Theater Festival in Atlanta where she acquired Disney’s rights to “Lion King Jr” in the greater Greer area.

"Cast members can not be any older than a senior in high school because junior shows are written for younger audiences,” Byouk said.

Byouk is inviting the community to donate unneeded household items to be used as props, mostly for “Mary Poppins”.

"It's not the first time we've asked for props," Byouk said. "We've been successful in getting a sewing machine and paint donated. The city of Greer has the "Keep Greer Greener" campaign and we want items that can be refurbished."

The City of Greer Parks and Recreation Department is hosting the Giving Thanks Student Art Show in conjunction with the GCAC. The theme is "What have I given to others or what can I give to others". The show is Nov. 5, 5-8 p.m. in the City Hall lobby and is free to the public.

Winners will be chosen in elementary, middle and high school divisions and will be displayed in the City Hall lobby until Thanksgiving.
