Mayer founded Lindley's Alliance for Disabled Youth, in 2005 and received non-profit status for it in 2010. Mayer’s brother, Brantley, and sister, Brock, are both disabled, Brantley is a junior at J.L. Mann and Brock graduated from Mann last year.
“Lindley is one of the sweetest girls I've ever known and very devoted to her chosen cause of raising awareness about the special gifts that people with disabilities possess, and encouraging others to rise above their own challenges and use their own unique abilities to find success,” Griffin stated.
Mayer has partnered with Special Olympics to promote the “Spread the Word to End the Word,” campaign. She's collecting signatures on her website of people who are pledging to stop using the “R-word” – "retarded" or "retard." “She would love to help erase the R-word from everyday language,” Griffin said. “It’s a word that she has heard far too often while watching her siblings grow up and navigate the world.”
Mayer also made special appearances and coordinating fundraiser for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, the Miss South Carolina official charity.
Competition continues this week at Columbia's Township Auditorium with pageant finals scheduled Saturday.
