BMW has announced that the new 2014 X5 Sports Activity Vehicle will enter its third generation when it arrives in showrooms during the fourth quarter. The makeover is a result of the highly successful two generations of the X5 that sold 1.3 million vehicles.

The new X5 sDrive 35i will be the first time that the model will be offered with rear-wheel drive. The Greer-produced X5 will offer more luxury, versatility and driving dynamics.
The all-new version of its X5 midsize SAV will have either a six- or eight-cylinder gas engine, or a six-cylinder diesel power plant. The third-generation X5 will have crisper lines and a more eye-catching profile while remaining mostly the same size as the present X5.
The X5 sDrive35i/xDrive35i, and xDrive 50i will be the first vehicles arriving. A second-generation front-wheel drive diesel xDrive35d, will appear in early 2014.
The new models will be lighter – six-cylinder versions about 170 pounds less, and V-8 models shed about 280 pounds. The use of high-strength steel, aluminum and magnesium throughout the new X5 means the xDrive351 will accelerate 0 to 60 mph in 6.2 seconds and the xDrive50i in 4.9 seconds.
BMW announced all 2014 X5 models come with an eight-speed automatic transmission.
The cabin will have a complete makeover with a 10.2-inch infotainment screen as the dashboard’s centerpiece.
The new X5 comes with a Drive Dynamic Control switch to allow the driver maximum comfort on all roads. Electronic power-assisted steering, electromechanical parking brake and a strong anti-locking braking system are among an assortment of driver assistance features.
Two new interior design packages are available – Ivory White and Mocha. The interior will seat up to seven people.
The X5 was the predecessor of the X3 and X6. The all-new X4 will be launched next year and assembled at the BMW Manufacturing Co. Greer plant.
