Caleb Rowe is shown in action vs. North Carolina State earlier this season. The former Blue Ridge High and starting quarterback for Maryland, suffered a torn anterior-cruciate ligament in his left knee Saturday and is out for the rest of the season.
Rowe becomes the fourth Maryland quarterback to go down with a season-ending injury and leaves the Terps (4-4 overall, 2-2 ACC) with no scholarship quarterbacks on the roster. Shawn Petty, a converted linebacker, is expected to start for Maryland this week against Georgia Tech.
According to reports, Rowe landed awkardly following a fourth-quarter scramble in Saturday’s 20-17 loss to Boston College. He returned to the game, but threw an interception as he tried to rally the Terps from the 20-17 deficit.
The town ACL injury was discovered during an MRI exam on Sunday.
"I feel awful for Caleb," Maryland coach Randy Edsall said in a statement released by the school. " I know how excited he was to get his opportunity to be the quarterback of this team. Caleb has a bright future ahead of him and we will do everything we can to support him through the rehab process."
Rowe completed 23 of 42 passes for 240 yards with two touchdowns and three interceptions against BC.
"It was fun actually being the guy," Rowe said after the BC loss. "It was a little more – actually a lot more – reps in practice. I’m a little more sore than usual."
Rowe, a three-year starter at Blue Ridge and Shrine Bowl selection as a senior, signed with Maryland as a senior and spent most of this season third on the Terps’ depth chart at quarterback.
