Riverside was so dominant, all 47 members of the state championship team won individual trophies this season, winning over 500 break rounds and trophies.

Riverside was so dominant, all 47 members of the state championship team won individual trophies this season, winning over 500 break rounds and trophies.

The Riverside High School Speech and Debate team won the 2014 state championship, its third straight, and coach David Dejesa is the AAAA Coach of the Year.

The team had 10 first place and three second place finishes.

At the 2014 State Tournament, Riverside students won 10 of 16 state events including:

• Gabe Williams, Children's Literature

• Stephanie Hong and Carol Lee, Duo Interpretation

•  Matthew Harrington, Declamation

• Alexander Koo, Original Oratory

• Nida Ansari, Extemporaneous Speaking

• Mary Carol Butterfield, Impromptu Speaking

• Dara Lazarova, Spontaneous Argumentation Debate

• Abigail Holland, Novice Lincoln Douglas Debate

•  Kerry Yan, Varsity Lincoln Douglas Debate

• Lorenzo Barberis Canonico, Congressional Debate

Did you know?

 • Abigail Holland, Ashley Marler, JD Dawson, and Cheyenne Sida swept the top four places in Novice Lincoln Douglas Debate.

• Lorenzo Barberis Canonico, Sulaiman Ahmad, Keanu Sida, and Rashed Abdel-Tawab swept the top four places in Congressional Debate.

• Alexander Koo, Stephanie Hong, Carol Lee, and Maggi Whiston swept the top four places in Original Oratory.

• Riverside students swept the Public Speaking events of Original Oratory, Declamation, Extemporaneous Speaking and Impromtpu Speaking.

• Kristyn Robinson, in her first year of competition,  won Outstanding Novice in Poetry Interpretation

• Keanu Sida, in his first year of competition, won Outstanding Novice in Congressional Debate.

• Coach David Dejesa was honored as the AAAA Coach of the Year by SC Forensics Coaches Association.
