Riverwood Farms fire, text messaging, sales tax on City Council's agenda

Greer Fire Chief Chris Harvey will make a presentation at City Council at 6:30 p.m. on a fire that destroyed one home and a 3-unit condominium last week at Riverwood Farms. There was no loss of life or reported injuries.

What started as a grass fire, allegedly started from a lit cigarette tossed from a vehicle, quickly raged out of control destroying homes for four families, scorching a wide section on Dillard Road with fire coming up to the doorsteps of many homes before it was brought under control.

Text messaging ordinance: Councilwoman Judy Albert’s request for the city to present an ordinance prohibiting the use of a mobile telephone for text messaging, distracted driving, and other functions will be heard with proposed exceptions and penalties. Read the proposed ordinance here.

Roads review: Reno Deaton, a member of the Greenville Citizens Road Advisory Commission, will present information and suggestions gathered from meetings held in each Greenville County city. Deaton is Executive Director of Greer Development Corporation. See council's recommendation below.

Sales tax: Resolution supporting 1 percent sales tax referendum: Council will vote on a resolution supporting Greenville County Council to call for a referendum allowing registered votes within the county to consider the issue of imposing a one percent sales and use tax for the purpose of funding road improvements and other related projects.

Pocket park: Greystone Cottages homeowners are asking for annexation for property at Shandwick Drive to establish a zoning classification of design review district (DRD) for 0.21 acres for the purpose of constructing green space (pocket park) on the vacant property.

34 homes: 8.1 acres at Gibbs Shoals and Dillard Road is requesting an annexation and zoning classification of DRD to construct 34 single family homes.

Special recognition: Danny, David and Gerald Gambrell will be receive special recognition of their retirement as a volunteer with the Greer Fire Department.

Petitioner: Maria Lynn has petitioned to speak on allowing chickens inside the city limits.
