Caleb Rowe, former Blue Ridge High School quarterback, is listed as tentative starter by Maryland for Saturday's game with Boston College.
Rowe, a freshman, was a three-year starter at Blue Ridge and signed with Maryland in February.
Three other quarterbacks have been lost for the season due to injury, including Perry Hillis this past week against N.C. State and Devin Burns, who was injured against the Wolfpack and finally ruled out for the year on Thursday. Incumbent starter C.J. Brown tore his ACL during a non-contact drill in August.
Hillis went down with a knee injury against the Wolfpack, and Burns was ruled out for the remainder of the season Thursday after suffering a foot injury.
That leaves Rowe as the only healthy scholarship quarterback on the Terps’ roster. Rowe played one series in last week’s loss to N.C. State. Rowe could also be the starter when the Terps travel to Clemson on Nov. 10.
In the final minutes, Rowe directed the Maryland offense into field-goal range, connecting on both his pass attempts for 50 yards, but the kick bounced off the left upright and the Wolfpack held on for a 20-18 victory.
Rowe finished his Blue Ridge career with more than 7,600 yards passing with 78 touchdowns in 31 games. He was a Shrine Bowl selection.
Rowe is the second freshman from the area forced into action due to injury. Former Greer quarterback Reese Hannon took over as the starter at Furman earlier this season and has remained at the helm of the Paladins’ offense.
