Hayden Stapleton hit a home run in the top of the first inning that ignited Northwood from Taylors to an 8-2 victory over the Central Region’s Midland, Mich., in its first game of the Junior League World Series at Taylor, Mich.
Hayden’s home run was the first of the JLWS and happened in Game 3.
Winning pitcher Caden Grice struck out eight Michigan batters, walked three and allowed three hits in 5.2 innings. Braden Johnson also had two hits and batted in three runs in the Sunday’s win.
There was a 56-minute rain delay with Northwood batting in the top of the seventh inning.
Northwood will play Southwest champion Corpus Christi, Texas Monday at 4 p.m. Southwest had a bye into the second round of the tournament.
If Northwood wins it will advance to Wednesday’s 8 p.m. game versus Kapaa Kauai, Hawaii, the West champion. It will be Northwood’s third game of the tournament and the West’s second.
