Thieves are not.
Do not put gift boxes on the curb to broadcast how wonderful a Christmas you had with new electronics, toys and big purchase items, the police suggest.
Captain Matt Hamby told GreerToday.com that residents should break down/cut up the boxes and dispose of them in trash bins or black bags. Or take them to a recycling center. “Residents should also take steps to better safeguard their home after Christmas, too. Criminals don’t take off on holidays,” Hamby said.
Other things to remember, according to Greer police staff:
• Stay off social media alerting criminals where you (text and photos) are, where you are going and when you are returning.
• Expecting a gift from a shipping service? Track the package online to have someone at home when it arrives. Or designate the package to a neighbor or request pickup at the post office or delivery service.
• Have a neighbor pick up any packages delivered until you return. That includes delivery notices left on doors.
• Don’t be a victim of “robbery by appointment”. That is when a person goes online to find a buyer, for example using Craigslist or other similar service, and both parties agree to meet in person to seal the deal. But when they meet, the buyer robs the seller. Make the meeting at a public place or the police station.
